Endemic to Tasmania, this slow-growing tree thrives only in cool, wet, high-altitude areas unaffected by recent fires. Its forests cannot regenerate after burning and must re-establish from neighbouring stands. Fewer than 100 km² of forest remain. It is Australia’s only cold-climate, winter-deciduous tree.
