Although relatively young in evolutionary terms, this extraordinary clonal plant covers 1.7 km of Tasmania’s southwest. Each plant lives for around 300 years, yet the clone itself has been self-propagating for at least 43,600 years—possibly up to 135,000. A sterile triploid, it produces no seed and reproduces only by cloning. Access to its site is restricted to prevent the spread of pathogens that could destroy this ancient survivor.
