This work is a reflection on my conflicting apathy and anxiety about the global-scale social, cultural and economic forces that are fuelling climate change, ecosystem collapse and a new wave of extinctions. Emerging from lived experience of the comforts and stresses of a thoroughly unremarkable yet privileged suburban life, the work examines comfort, distraction and insularity as key factors in the maintenance of unsustainable and ultimately destructive economic and cultural systems.
Through this work I contemplate the merits and pitfalls of building barriers - physical, digital, narrative, psychological - to the outside world. Barriers that shore up the pleasures and apparent safety of home, barriers that, in some measure, are essential to leading a ‘normal’ daily life, but which nonetheless obscure our precarious position and prevent meaningful change.
