“Friday Arvo at the Sorell Maccas”, came from a desire to paint the everyday landscapes around me. Musing on the sanctity we afford the places familiar to us, I was thinking a lot on themes of paradise. As such, Hieronymus Bosch's, “The Garden of Earthly Delights”, immediately sprang to mind.
In the hustle of the three p.m. rush, Sorell can seem not dissimilar to that odd tangle of bodies, everyone pursuing their own private motivations and desires in the middle of the Woolies' carpark. So this painting works as an imaging of what the garden might look like in a local, contemporary context, albeit with slightly more sheep.
