Art Collecting Groups
Bett Gallery Hobart is well known for the successful development and management of art collecting groups over a 25 year period. There are 20 or so such groups currently operating throughout Australia.
Expressions of interest are invited from people wishing to join a group based in their region. Members are not art professionals but those with a keen interest in acquiring a good working knowledge and experience of contemporary art and in developing a high quality collection of contemporary Australian art.
How does it work?
Each collection has a well-proven constitution, governing all aspects of its independent management.
Bett Gallery Hobart provides continuing curatorial guidance, management support and individual member advice.
Over the ten-year life of the collection members jointly purchase works of art, which are rotated around members homes every six months.
Members meet four times a year with meetings rostered around homes, artist studios and exhibition venues. Meetings are social occasions as well as opportunities to view and discuss acquired works and to hear expert invited guest speakers including artists, curators and collectors.
At the end of the ten years, collected works are valued and there is a private auction open only to the shareholders. Members use their equity in the collection to bid and in this way the collection is redistributed from collective ownership to private ownership.
What does it cost?
There is a joining fee of $1,000. Each share is $2,000 to $5,000 per year (depending on the group) and is paid quarterly. A share can be held by a couple or other joint entity. |
