Artist's statement
Birds are an essential part of the world and our psyche. From great distances we recognize their forms as they quicken our hearts with their songs and flight.
At 'Blackstone' on Bruny Island I watch, listen and feel awe in the presence of birds, and they have become a joyful part of my art practice. Each sculpture is a prayer for increase, a meditation on the vulnerability and beauty of birds, a plea for action to be taken to protect their habitat.
Nature, time and the elements combine in these contemplative artworks in the tradition of Taoist spirit-stones. With driftwood collected from the shore of Blackstone Bay and minimal intervention using only hand-tools, essential avian qualities slowly emerge. I know when they are finished, for only then do they sing.
All proceeds go towards creating habitat and sanctuary for native species on Blackstone's 55 acres, particularly for endangered 40-spotted pardalotes. Over the past four years we have planted over four thousand endemic trees and understorey species on our land. |
