As the title of the exhibition suggests, this is a show of (mostly larger)
paintings selected from years 2000 to 2005, including new paintings never
before exhibited. The artist will deliver a gallery floor talk about the
exhibition and answer questions.
Melbourne based artist Peter Atkins (b.1963-) studied at the National Art
School, Sydney, and was awarded a scholarship between 1985-87 which
allowed him to travel extensively through Asia, the Middle East and
Europe. Since this time, he has continued to travel widely, compiling
'visual diaries' that provide the source material for many of his painted
works. These diaries consist of ordered displays of his collections of
various found objects and images, usually mundane and discarded materials,
such as bread tags, button, shards of crockery, etc.
By its nature, the collection consists of repetition of form and through
Atkins arrangement or imposed structure in his diaries, it develops into
pattern and decoration guided by a strong abstract aesthetic. Be it his
visual diaries or his final painted works, his handling of the discarded
matter of daily existence sees it transcend its ordinariness into
stimulating and highly collectable works of art.
Peter Atkins is an important representative of Australian art in the
international arena. He was sole Australian representative and gold medal
recipient at the VIII Triennale-India in 1994; he has exhibited in
Australia, France, Taiwan, Korea, Japan, Italy, and Spain; he was awarded
an Australia Council Studio residency in Barcelona August through November
1998; in 1999 his work was featured in Five Continents and Once City, in
Mexico City Gallery, curated by Gao Minglu, as well as at ARCO in Madrid.
Peter Atkins is represented major public and corporate collections
throughout Australia. |
